Self catering holiday Accommodation- near St James, Manche, Normandy

SAINT-MALO

is a very pleasant beach resort that is often overlooked by holiday makers; the sandy beaches stretch out below the ramparts of the old town and are accessible from the sea facing sides of this historic town. This makes them very convenient for the cafes and restaurants of the overlooking old town. There is a causeway/footpath across to the nearest of the islands uncovered at low tide, and a tide washed swimming pool in easy reach.

There are also two Aquariums in the St Malo area one actually inside the town walls (Le Petit Aquarium D'Intra Muros) and the other on the outskirts of the town called Le Grand Aquarium, La Ville-Jouan, Avenue General Patton, St Malo. This one has the only 360-degree aquarium in Europe , making it possible to experience life below the waves without getting wet. The aim of this aquarium is not only to entertain but also to help to understand the delicate balance of our fragile ecology.

The old town is a bustling place at almost every time of the day, and it is possible to walk all around the ramparts of the town thus getting excellent views of both it and the surrounding port. Largely rebuilt after the devastation wreaked by the retreating forces, it is a monument to the ingenuity of the French in rebuilding in such a way that the new is almost indistinguishable from the old.

Often on summer evenings these streets come alive with the sounds of musicians, puppeteers, & jugglers, playing, singing and dancing on the terraces and outside of the numerous pavement cafes and restaurants.

There are many coastal walks in this area - a must for bird lovers.

CANCALE

is the attractive oyster capital of northern France . This lovely little fishing port on Brittany 's northern coast is famous for its oyster beds, and every year hundreds of tons of these exquisite shellfish are farmed and raised here to be sold to fish markets and restaurants all over the world. The picturesque sea front is brimming with wonderful seafood restaurants.

If you walk along the harbour you can contemplate the menus at the numerous restaurants, or better still go inside one and sample some of the freshly caught delicacies on offer. Cancale's Ferme Marine invites visitors to come and understand the life and ways of oyster farming from the seeding & harvesting to the final delicate enjoyment.

The guided tour takes one hour, which includes a slide show and a visit to the Parcs St Kerber workshops. Also there is an incredible exhibition of thousands of seashells from all over the world, and a film on pearl fishing. Beyond the town are cliff top walks that lead down to tiny often secluded sandy beaches, which are often covered at high tide, but where the local people collect shellfish and prawns in buckets at low water.

These sandy bays are safe for paddling and swimming with numerous rock pools to explore. Further around the coast are more beaches, and not very far west is the lovely town of St Malo .

  DINAN

This medieval town with its old houses, streets and ramparts which overlook the Rance is the place to see.

Its market on Thursday is well worth a visit and the créperies and various restaurants at very reasonable prices will definitely keep Dinan in your memories. In particular the port with it's viaduct is a "must see" with all its restaurants with chances to sit outside and enjoy the warm summer sun. The beautiful village of Lehon on the other side of the Rance is something you shouldn't miss. www.dinan-tourisme.com/
